ZIPAIR Review: Flights from Singapore to Tokyo

Samuel TingWhen my bestie and I decided to explore Tokyo, we were mainly focussed on finding a budget-friendly flight. Our friends first suggested flying with a major airline, but we were looking for a fresh experience, so we chose ZIPAIR, a low-cost carrier that grabbed our interest.
ZIPAIR operated under the Japan Airlines that started operations in 2020 and is based in Narita, Tokyo. We did our research and were impressed by its growing reputation in the budget travel market, but the competitive pricing grabbed our attention.
With our past experiences with budget airlines, we were cautious but excited. We noticed the modern cabin and comfortable seating from the moment we boarded. Even the flight attendants were friendly and attentive. If you plan your trip to Tokyo, we recommend adding ZIPAIR to your list. With great prices and a satisfying flying experience, it’s a choice you won’t regret!
ZIPAIR is also present in the U.S., where it flies from San Jose, Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. We have provided a detailed review below if you want to know more about this airline.
What Is ZIPAIR?
It is obvious that while booking flight tickets, everybody wants to choose the most affordable option, ZIPAIR fits the scene here. As we mentioned before, ZIPAIR is a newly launched airline that provides low-cost travel solutions to flyers. A subsidiary of JAL (Japan Airlines), ZIPAIR started its operations in 2020. In just a few years, the company has expanded its regional presence.
On a ZIPAIR flight, passengers receive Japanese-style hospitality, which is great. But what we liked the most was the affordability. You can enjoy full service on ZIPAIR, and that, too, at a lower cost. From inflight meals to snacks and check-in bags to blankets, they provide it all. The good thing is that you pay only for what you want.
We want to mention that ZIPAIR only flies to Narita Airport, which is quite far from Tokyo. This could be a bummer for those who want to land directly in Tokyo. Apart from this slight inconvenience, everything else about ZIPAIR feels fine.
Schedule And Flight Release
ZIPAIR’s schedule provides service between Singapore and Narita Airport. However, they have only one flight daily, which makes things difficult for travellers, especially those who have kids with them.
The flight schedule is not very accommodating because of the odd timings. The flight travels from Singapore at 1:20 AM to Narita Airport at 9:05 AM. If you are to board the flight from Narita Airport, the timing is 5:20 PM, and it reaches Singapore at 11:50 PM.
As you can see, none of these times are ideal for parents with kids, and they can be problematic even for adults. But if you want to save more on your flight tickets, we recommend choosing ZIPAIR.
As for the flight release, ZIPAIR releases its schedule per season for all the routes included. Since there’s no specific time, you must check the notification page for updates.
Booking Process And Fare
When we first booked flight tickets for ZIPAIR, we noticed how easy the entire booking process was. This is done to ensure that travellers can book flight tickets without hassles. However, if you are travelling by ZIPAIR for the first time, you may get surprised with their plenty of add-ons and different fare options. You can choose from the available options depending on your budget and preference.
The base fare, including amenities like entertainment and Wi-Fi, costs around $400 for a round trip. It is the most affordable option provided. However, you will have to pay extra for meals and water, extra baggage, and seat selection.
Check-In And Boarding
Based on our experience, the check-in counter at the airport becomes operational 3 hours prior to the departure time. You must check in in person, as they have not provided an online option.
During the check-in process, they weigh your carry-on and check-in luggage and provide the boarding passes. For those concerned about the boarding, it happens from the back first after priority boarding. This is for Singapore to Narita Airport. For those boarding the plane from Narita Airport, the boarding happens from Assisted/Priority boarding to All Passengers.
Since ZIPAIR allows limited carry-on baggage, you can take your time finding a place. But sometimes, passengers may have extra luggage from duty-free shops, making the overhead space more limited.
Cabin Amenities and Comfort
Although ZIPAIR is a budget-friendly airline, it does not compromise on service quality. It allows passengers to travel in comfort and provides the necessary amenities. The plane is maintained nicely, so you have nothing to complain about.
Compared to other flights, ZIPAIR is smaller. It has three rows of three seats, which are comfortable and has enough leg space. However, there’s less legroom on the flight, so that can be a problem for some people.
Regarding other amenities, the tray table features a user-centric design, making it easier to handle. Additionally, there are chargers, storage nooks, coat hooks, and pull-down fold-out trays. These things make travelling more convenient, especially if you have kids.
One of the best things about ZIPAIR is that they provide free Wi-Fi. Instead of feeling bored on the flight, you can keep entertained using their Wi-Fi system. As far as in-flight entertainment is concerned, they have limited streaming options. You can stream on your devices as much as you like.
The Food
When booking our tickets on ZIPAIR, we chose an on-flight meal. There are two options per flight. However, they may or may not follow the dietary restrictions, so you need to be careful if you have any such restrictions.
Food is served to passengers in the first hour of the flight. You must show your boarding pass to avail yourself of your meal. The portion size is small in comparison so if you tend to get hungry quickly, you should bring your own snacks.
Final Words
Overall, ZIPAIR may not be the best airline to travel with, but it is more affordable. If you can adjust to minor inconveniences, you can enjoy a cheap ride from Singapore to Tokyo and vice versa. Since this is a new airline, they still have room for improvement. We recommend you try this airline to experience its service yourself.
