Samuel TingMaking money on YouTube through advertisements is likely one of the most well-liked methods of income for creators, although it is not always as easy as just posting a lot of content and expecting the money to start coming in. I recall when I first began, I just figured that after I reached a good amount of views, I would start making good money automatically. Boy, was I wrong!
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP)
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is wonderful, though you must learn the ad system and what type of content actually earns you revenue.
Joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP)
To be eligible for YPP, you typically need at least 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of eligible public watch time in the past 12 months, or 10 million public views for Shorts within 90 days. Then, you will need to meet YouTube’s monetization policies and add a Google AdSense account.
But the reality that gets misconstrued by most is that it’s not as if you’ll be drowning in ad money the second that you’re eligible. You still have to optimize your videos, entertain your audience, and experiment with what ads perform best. YPP is the door; you still have to go down the hallway to reach your destination. You can learn more from here.
Types of YouTube Ads
YouTube has multiple types of ads. You have likely noticed display ads on the side of a video on desktop or overlay ads that appear near the bottom of the video. There are skippable video ads, non-skippable video ads, bumper ads, and mid-roll ads. They each function in a different way and can impact your earnings in a different way.
I found out the hard way that hitting viewers with too many mid-roll ads is disastrous for retention. Viewers will simply click away if they’re frustrated, which will net you less watch time overall. It’s a revenue vs. viewer happiness tightrope you sort of have to figure out as you go.
Setting Up Google AdSense
To get paid, you have to associate your YouTube channel with a Google AdSense account. Easy peasy: join AdSense, associate it with YouTube under Monetization settings in your account, confirm your payment information, and ensure you’ve reached the $100 payout threshold.
I’ve personally ended up waiting an additional weeks once since I didn’t confirm my address. That little mistake held up my whole payment. So be sure to watch out for things like that to prevent additional waiting periods.
Ad-Friendly Content Guidelines
YouTube’s policies are rigorous when it comes to being advertiser-friendly. If your video contains excessive cursing, violent or graphic content, or controversial subject matter, you’ll get fewer ads or even lose monetization altogether.
I did upload a rant video one time (it was about a really annoying problem with something I bought) and I did use some language that YouTube didn’t like. Boom—limited ads. It was not the end of the world, but it was a lesson to be a bit more careful with the rules and maybe rant a bit more politely.
Maximizing Video Content for Extra Ad Revenues
To help you earn the most from your ads, you need to take note of video duration, engagement, and ad placement strategy. Videos that are over 8 minutes long allow for mid-roll advertisements, which can help boost your revenue if used strategically. Requesting viewers to subscribe, like, and comment can also assist with retention and general engagement.
What I’ve found to work is to insert mid-roll ads at natural breaks in the narrative, like mini cliffhangers. Just don’t get carried away. If listeners feel ad-spammed, they’ll lose interest fast.
Using YouTube Analytics
YouTube Analytics is incredible if you really get into it. Check your watch time and average view duration to determine whether viewers are dropping off early. Check audience demographics, because if your viewership comes from countries where CPM is higher, you’re earning more money per thousand views.
I try to monitor my CTR (Click-Through Rate) on titles and thumbnails. If they are not high, I know I need to make a change. Also, revenue reports will let you see how different forms of advertising are contributing to your revenue, which can help you hone your strategy in the long term.
Optimizing CPM (Cost Per Mille)
CPM can vary greatly depending on your niche, audience, and even the time of year. Certain subject topics like finance, investing, product reviews of tech, and business advice will inevitably attract advertisers that are willing to pay more. While more broad or entertainment-type content might suffer from lower CPMs.
I’ve found myself that my tech videos earn a higher CPM than my vlogs. This is also the reason why some YouTubers decide to diversify their content or tilt more towards niches that traditionally fetch higher ad rates.
Diversification Beyond Ads
Advertising revenue can fluctuate, so it’s dangerous to depend on that by itself. That’s why sponsorships, affiliate marketing, merchandise, and memberships are necessary. I did a sponsored video once for a software firm, and let me tell you, it earned me more than a month’s ad revenue. It helped me realize that if you watch out for proper brand deals, you can earn a lot without relying on YouTube’s ad system. You can improve your engagement with Views4You.
Compliance and Best Practices
To avoid having random issues like strikes or demonetization, make sure that you follow copyright laws, especially with music and images. Follow FTC guidelines and disclose any sponsored content. Trust me, your viewers prefer to know, and it keeps you out of trouble.
I learned to always double-check for any copyrighted music in my videos. It’s so easy to accidentally include a few seconds of something you’re not supposed to, and then you lose out on monetization or even get a claim.
FAQ
How much money can you earn from YouTube advertisements?
It’s not the same. It’s dependent on your CPM rates, the number of views you’re receiving, and where your viewers are originating from. Some content creators earn around 3 to 10 dollars for every thousand monetized views, and there are others in high-earning niches who earn more.
How do I boost my YouTube ad revenues?
Focus on keeping viewers tuned in for longer periods, employ mid-roll ads sparingly, and try producing content in higher-CPM verticals. Engagement is important as well—if viewers hang in there and engage with your content, you receive more ad impressions.
Is YouTube ad revenue variable?
Yes. CPM rates fluctuate based on time of year, what advertisers are willing to pay, and what’s popular in the world. The second half of the year is typically higher since holiday advertising always costs more.
