In a world where eSports has grown into fame, Malaysia is one of the nations that is rapidly getting inclined with this sport. Studies reveal over 14 million gamers play eSports in Malaysia and the revenue is expected to grow to $6.1 in 2024. No doubt, many factors have been responsible for the increasing growth.

The Malaysian population has a large number of youngsters, and this coupled with the emergence of mobile gaming has triggered the increasing eSports popularity. Government’s support has also been another contributing factor. Aside from creating agencies to aid this sport and sharing incentives to encourage gamers, authorities further invested over $6 million into developing the industry.

Many talents are being nurtured in the region with the right infrastructure, thereby helping Malaysian Gamers gain a foot in international competition with great performances. Winning 4 medals from the SEA Olympic competition is a testament to the improved eSport culture and landscape. With many competitions and juicy prizes all around, it’s normal for diverse teams to emerge and try to win generous prizes.

However, teams are not equal, and some gaming groups in Malaysia have proven to be a force to reckon with in the global eSport scene. On this page, we will show you the top gaming brands in Malaysia. You will also learn about their achievements, key players, what makes them unique, and more.

Esports Games

1. Team Secret (Malaysia Division)

Team Secret started globally in 2014 as a Dota 2 team and has grown steadily over the years. They adapted their strategies to many other games like Rainbow Six Siege, Valorant, LoL, etc., and they are mostly the favorite on the 1Win app to place a bet on. The organization keeps expanding its reach globally, leading to the creation of the Team Secret in Malaysia in 2024.

This Division has squads that compete in Dota 2 and PUBG Mobile. The Malaysian squad has hit the ground running and is ready to dominate Southeast Asia. Their performance so far speaks volumes as both Team Secret PUBG and Dota 2 are becoming forces to reckon with.

They’ve won 4 competitions, came second twice, and third once in 9 tournaments they’ve contested in 2024. The teams have also represented the country well in Southeast Asia competitions like the Honor of Kings Eye SEA Cup, Honor of Kings International SEA Last Chance Qualifiers, PUBG Mobile Global Championship, PUBG Mobile Pro Leagues, and others. Their triumphant performance at the regional tournament granted them the honor of flying the Malaysia flag in the PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2021.

Team Secret Malaysia Players

Without the right talents, this eSport team will struggle to be heard globally. Below are some key players who have helped lead Team Secret to success.

  1. Cha Jia Xuan: Xiann, as he is fondly called, joined the squad in April from RTZ Sports Club and plays as Top Lane. He helped them to the first position in the Honor of Kings International SEA Last Chance Qualifiers and second place in three different competitions. Xiann has earned more than $50,000.
  2. Hoo Wen Feng: TianX is the Jungler, and he has been a member since April. He has the same achievement as Xiann, but he joined from RCG Gaming.
  3. Chong Khean Loong: Loong’s prowess lies in the middle laner position. The 17-year-old started his gaming career here and has been phenomenal. He has won over $48,000 gaming with this squad.

2. Orange Esports

The Orange Esports started in July 2011 in Kuala Lumpur and is a vital team in the Malaysian and Global eSport scene. They had squads for Dota 2 and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, but their Malaysia Dota 2 team was less popular than the MLBB. In short, their fame came from their MLBB tournament prowess, especially their exploits in the Mobile Legends Professional League (MPL) under Mushi’s leadership.

Before Season 6 of MPL Malaysia, they were known as Orange Esports Reborn before changing to Orange. Louvre Esports. The team agreed to be called their recent name in Season 7, and their performance propelled the Malaysian eSport industry to global recognition. Orange maintained a top-three position in most of their seasons at the Mobile Legends Professional League in the country and even came second in season 9.

In Dota 2, the team finished second in The Games Expo and the MGT. A deserving triumph finally came in the Malaysia Invitational in 2011, and they put much effort into the Electronic Sports World Cup but were not lucky. Changes started in the team when Dota 2 Ace Mushi took a break from playing, and most of his team members were replaced as well.

Before their official separation in 2023, they were known for constantly developing young talents, as they were not afraid to replace top members who left with young ones. Their consistency in both Dota and MLBB helped showcase them to the Esports world, and it was vital to the early development stage of cybersports in the nation.

Esports Team

3. Geek Fam

Geek Fam is famous for its Dota 2, PUBG Mobile, and MLBB prowess. When they started in 2016, they had the goal of building a vibrant and inclusive gaming community, and that’s exactly what they are doing. Aside from the Geek Fam, which is the gaming squad, they organized Geek Arena for game-related products and shopping, Geek TV for streaming, and Geek event for gaming community purposes.

Further, their Dota 2 team has proven to be one of the most competitive sides in the Malaysia Esports League and beyond. They started by making it to the Phase 2 Qualifiers final at the ESL One in 2016, and they got their first championship the following year at the ProDota Cup Southeast Asia. They’ve maintained a top position ever since and won over 20 championships. Their performance in Dota 2 has further brought attention to the cybersports sector in this country. Some of their achievements are:

  • 2nd Place in MPL Indonesia Season 12 (2023)
  • 5th-6th Place in M5 World Championship (2023)
  • 2nd Place in ONE Esports MPL Invitational 2022
  • 2nd Place in Top Clans 2022 Winter Invitational
  • 2nd Place in MLBB: Around Nation Championship S3 (Geek Fam Jr.)

As a sequel to the success of Dota 2, Geek Fam also introduced excellent PUBG Mobile, Wild Rift, and Free Fire teams, amongst others. This is because they source for talents across the country to make the team competitive. The PUBG Mobile team might not be as tough as Dota 2, but they’ve maintained an average performance since they started. They won the Season 3 MPL MY/SG championship in 2019 and came second in Season 5. They haven’t gone beyond 3rd place since, but they’ve maintained constant qualifications in the league.

Geek Fam remains a significant force in the Malaysian cyber sports world. The relentless efforts to gather raw gaming talents and nurture them into professionals are welcomed in the nation. This has also fueled the increasing popularity and growth of gaming culture amongst Malaysians.

4. Todak

Todak is another top Esports team contributing to its growth in Malaysia. This 2019 organization initially aimed to create a gaming community that can be nurtured into greatness. Little did they know they would become a team making waves in a very short time. The team has representatives in Mobile Legends Bang Bang, which competed in the MPL MY/SG Season 4 Qualifier and ended in the top two before becoming a runner-up in the main league.

Although Todak later created squads for Free Fire, Wild Rift, Dota 2, and others, MLBB has always stood out. Many are thrilled by their aggressiveness, and their brutality has resulted in most clashes. The trick is that the opponents are often surprised by the pacey and brutal playing style. Interestingly, the style won them the MPL MY/SG Season 6, their first major trophy.

The following outings were less lucky than the season six, especially when they lost the season 7 and 8 finals. Todak won the Malaysia Esports Selection Qualifier in 2022 and the season 9 and 11 championships. The team also competed in many Southeast Asia and global competitions, which include:

  • MLBB SEA Cup
  • ONE Esports MPL Invitational
  • M2, M3, and M4 World Championships
  • MPL Invitational 4 Nations Cup
  • Snapdragon Pro Series
  • Felda Nations Championship
  • Johor All Stars, and others.

As they strive for success, Todak carries its community along. They easily engage the members and fans in the country, which not only creates awareness and will to participate but also helps develop real talents. The team is popular for the slogan “Breaking The Limit,” which promotes a culture of limitless resilience in overcoming obstacles.

5. Team SMG

Team SMG was founded in 2017 by JJ Lin. They are rising stars represented in Volarant, MLBB, and League of Legends, and they strive to excel in all three. Their performance in SEA competitions has gained traction over the years.

For instance, the Dota 2 squad won the 2021 DPC Season 2 Open Qualifier for Southeast Asia and the OB Moon Asian Arena Championship. They also came first in the SEA qualifiers for The International Competition. In Mobile Legends, they won the season 8 MPL and season 6 qualifiers and were second in seasons 11 and 12.

The Valorant squad is one of the finest in the game. Their debut competition ended in 3rd place, but they still had to win their first tournament the same month they started. Team Still Moving under Gunfire won season 1 of the Bad Blood series as well as the AOC Masters Tournament – Singapore, TheGym Singapore Invitational, and First Strike.

Before their 2024 disbandment, Team SMG dominated the 2023 Volarant Competition, with first position all through, except for the last, which they ended in fourth place. Team SMG leans towards innovation and training, which has helped the Malaysian gaming community. This also made the February 2024 disbanding shocking.
