ArchivebotIt appears that AMD has decided to bestow the honors of a Magny Cours system on some lucky soul who writes a convincing enough essay about what they would do with a 48 core system. This system would be along the lines of a personal supercomputer. It would allow for someone to do things with that system that most software today is not capable of utilizing.
The following specs are what will be awarded:
The AMD Server team is kicking March off with a new contest. We are seeking your best essays, videos, or blog posts documenting how you might use 48 cores. One winner will be selected and awarded with:
• Four new AMD Opteron™ processors Model 6174, 12-core [2.2 GHz]
• TYAN S8812 motherboard: the motherboard is a Tyan S8812 that features 4 processor sockets with the capacity for you to install up to 8 DIMMs per socket
• one copy of Windows Server® 2008
Approximate retail value of all prizes is $8,189 USD.
Note that this contest can be an essay, a video or a blog post. Either way, if you’re convincing… you’ve got 48 cores headed your way. In addition to that, you’d still need a shedload of memory and a power supply just to get the damn thing running. So, there is still quite a considerable investment that would be required of the essayist or videographer who enters said contest. This is a great contest, but we really wish they had made it more accessible globally and supplied things like memory and power just so that anyone could afford to win this setup.
Hopefully, we will see some interesting entries during this contest and AMD will award this system to those who really need it or could do the most good with it. Perhaps, even, run this kind of a contest more often to facilitate good. If you’re interested in entering this contest or want to read more about it, head on over to the AMD contest page and read the details about the contest.
