I was excited to learn that Mazda upgraded SUV CX 9 to CX-90, a more luxurious version of last year’s model. I was even more thrilled after reading the spec sheet because I felt the new SUV was specially designed for me.
Unable to control my excitement, I decided to take a test drive. Long story short, I bought the car. Some of you may think I acted on impulse. But I can assure you I didn’t. The Mazda CX-90 is equipped with everything you need in an SUV.
From looks to performance, the company has upgraded every aspect, creating a new beast within an affordable price range. Since many of you are intrigued about the 2025 model, here’s my Mazda CX-90 review.
What’s New In the 2025 Model?
Of course, the 2025 version is better and more powerful, and I will share the changes the model has made so you can gain a better insight.
The 2025 Mazda CX-90 has a new Premium Sport trim and a 12.3-inch central display. The company has also added a new trim to the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version.
The gas-powered version has six trims: Premium Sport, Preferred, Select, Premium Plus, S Premium Plus, and S Premium. Its cost ranges between $39,300 and $57,905. The CX-90 PHEV has three trims: Premium Plus, Preferred, and Premium Sport. Its cost ranges between $51,400 and $59,405.
The CX-90 offers three engine choices, all in different price ranges. The gas version of the model has a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and is powered by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
The CX-90 PHEV has a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine powered by a 17.8-kWh battery and an electric motor.
Performance
As stated above, the Mazda CX-90 uses a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine and a 48-volt hybrid system, an upgrade from the previous year’s model.
In non-S trims, it produces 332 pound-feet of torque and 280 horsepower. However, the S models are more powerful, producing 369 pound-feet of torque and 340 horsepower.
The plug-in hybrid version offers 369 pound-feet of torque and 323 horsepower. All CX-90 models have a standard all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The S model is powerful for both highway and city driving. The 340-horsepower engine runs smoothly, but the paddle shifters on the steering wheel are slow to respond.
The eight-speed automatic works better if left to shift on its own. However, the engine makes some rough sounds that are not very pleasing.
Interior And Comfort
Mazda CX-90 boasts a fancy cabin with unique details like door panels and fabric inserts on the dashboard. A second-row bench seat is also perfect for 7-8 passengers. Upper trims have a third row suitable for two people, while other models fit three. However, the third row is best for children.
Second-row captain’s chairs offer great comfort. However, based on the third-row setup, they reduced the seating capacity to 6-7.
Leather seats are standard in the preferred trim, but the Premium Plus trims come with high-end Nappa leather. The preferred trim also offers plenty of storage space for large carry bags.
Final Verdict
The Mazda CX-90 sets a new standard for luxury and performance. It is a great choice if you are looking for a high-performance SUV within an affordable price range. I can confidently say I don’t regret buying this car.
