One such example are the careers of two friends, John Byrne and Roy Taylor. They started their business relationship under the banner of Blue Micro, selling x86-compliant processors built by International Business Machines – IBM for short.
As that venture didn’t work out, two friends ended up on opposite sides, with John gaining a foothold in the discrete graphics space with ATI (anyone remember Advance3D?) and now AMD (where he serves as the Chief Sales Officer), while Roy started driving developer and marketing initiatives that got Nvidia into a position where they are now. With Roy being fed up with all the politics around the Tegra group, he took off and ended in a lavish home in Melrose, CA, running MasterImage 3D and recently, Rightware Oy.
Today, the tandem makes quite the combo, since Roy’s way of supporting developers and pushing titles had a lasting effect, while John lead practically every sales success AMD achieved after politicking got rid of brilliant minds like Dave, Henri, Pierre, Giuseppe, Raja, Godfrey, Rick and many others.
Knowing that he has to build the team of most competent people that need to tackle Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm and others in the field of desktop, mobile and enterprise – only the best sales experts come to mind. Thus, we were not surprised when we received the news that Roy Taylor decided to leave the role of Chief Sales Officer at Rightware and take on the role of Head of AMD WW Channels Sales, position previously held by John Byrne.
It is expected that Roy will lead the sales charge, using all of his skills and expertise created in those years when it was his Nvidia that was fighting ATI e.g. AMD. It is not known who will Rightware appoint to lead the sales team, but knowing the company management, we would be surprised if another Nvidia oldtimer, Derek Perez – steps up to the plate.
But Roy at AMD is an interesting appointment, that’s for sure.
