Travellers heading towards Kuala Lumpur will have an exciting new option starting September 1, as Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, announced the launch of its new flight route to Subang, Malaysia. The announcement was made on July 18, confirming that Scoot will operate this new route using its Airbus A320 aircraft, offering a convenient alternative for those traveling between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

The new route between Singapore and Subang will be served daily, providing travellers with seven flights a week. Currently, Firefly is the only airline operating direct flights from Singapore to Subang, but it uses ATR72-500 turboprop aircraft from Seletar Airport. With Scoot entering the market, passengers can now enjoy the convenience of flights operated by narrowbody aircraft from Changi Airport.

Subang’s Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, located approximately 26 km west of Kuala Lumpur, offers a closer alternative to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which is about 50 km south of the city. This makes Subang a strategic choice for travellers looking to access the Malaysian capital more conveniently.

Scoot’s new daily flights aim to provide customers with an alternative option to conveniently travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and beyond to the rest of Scoot’s network. With the addition of Subang, Scoot’s route network will increase to 70 destinations. By September, the airline will operate 110 weekly flights to various destinations in Malaysia, including Ipoh, Kota Kinabalu, Kuantan, Kuching, Langkawi, Miri, Penang, and Sibu.

Ticket sales for the new Subang route have already begun and are available through Scoot’s website and mobile app, with prices for a one-way economy class flight starting from S$83 (US$61) from Singapore to Subang and RM108 (US$23) from Subang to Singapore. Bookings through other channels will be progressively made available, subject to government and regulatory approvals or changes.

The addition of Subang to Scoot’s route network comes at a time when narrowbody aircraft operations are set to resume at Subang Airport. Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has indicated that testing and commissioning works are currently underway, with operations expected to start in August 2024. The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) has approved six airlines – four Malaysian and two foreign – to operate interim narrowbody aircraft services from Subang Airport during the interim period from August 2024 until 2028.

Among the other airlines confirmed to fly out of Subang are Indonesia’s PT TransNusa Aviation Mandiri (TransNusa), which will start flights to Jakarta, and Malaysian carriers Firefly, Batik Air Malaysia, and AirAsia Malaysia. AirAsia’s group chief executive officer, Bo Lingam, announced that the airline will begin selling tickets from Subang to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu from July 23, with operations using the Airbus A320.

The resumption of flights and the introduction of new routes from Subang Airport are set to enhance connectivity and provide travellers with more options, boosting the convenience and efficiency of air travel between Singapore and Malaysia.
