LG’s UltraGear 27GN950 promises ultra-smooth response times at 4K

In the world of flat-panel monitors, you usually have to choose between two paths. The path where the monitors come with IPS panels offers crisp graphics and accurate colors. The other, where the monitors use TN panels, sacrifices detail and colors on the altar of speed and quick response times. On top of that, there is an unwritten rule which states that the more pixels a panel has to move, the slower it performs.

LG’s latest 27” UltraGear 4K IPS gaming monitor is impressive precisely because it gallantly ignores everything stated above. Its specifications read as if it somehow blinked into existence from a parallel universe.

On the one hand, it’s equipped with an IPS panel with a full 4K Ultra HD resolution (3840 x 2160), like the best professional monitors. On the other, it has 1 ms (millisecond) GtG (gray-to-gray) response times, runs at 144Hz, and supports both FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync. Those features lead to smooth motion and minimal latency.

One of its weak spots seems to be its brightness, to only 400 nits (typical). Although that won’t bother most gamers, photographers, graphic artists, and HDR fans would better look elsewhere.

The UltraGear 27GN950 has already started popping up at retailers, ranging from $750 to $800.
