nVidia to launch GeForce GTX 470/480 on March 27, 2010?

As California begun to wake up, we saw a tweet from the official nVidia GeForce twitter page stating the following:

ARE YOU READY? Check back here on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. PST for a major announcement!

nVidia: Are You Ready [for DirectX 11]?

This raises suspicion that nVidia is going to announce the official launch date of the GeForce GTX 470 and 480 cards, presumably at the end of next month. After checking in with our sources, we got multiple indications that GeForce GTX 470 and 480 should launch on March 27, 2010. On the other hand, March 29, 2010 was also mentioned as the day when all the reviews should hit the web. We don’t know if any of these dates are true or not, so we’ll just let it be.

At first, it did not made any sense to us why a company would make a product launch on Saturday [March 27], unless something really special is going on. Given the mountain of expectations from nVidia’s army of fanboys and more importantly, analysts, technical press, AIBs and others in IT ecosystem, nVidia has to do something out of this world: deliver the world’s largest gathering of transistors in one place, three billion transistors in reasonable quantities.

We also learned that nVidia re-worked the PCB to increase the “efficiency of the design” [?] and modified the heatsink. Final retail products should come with the same thermals as the old GeForce GTX 280, meaning nVidia is repeating the GTX 280/285 with GTX 480 and its probable future die-shrink.

In any case, we’ll learn things for sure on Monday, February 22 at 09:00 Pacific.
