The launch results of Fallout: New Vegas are in, and they’re quite impressive. Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company shipped five million units for the launch. The game was available for Microsoft Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the PC platform through Microsoft’s Games for Windows program. Furthermore, the game was available through digital distribution services such as Steam and Games for Windows: Live, with Steam presumably carrying the bulk of digital sales.
The publisher announced that the game raked in over 300 million USD. While retail sales generated over 250 million dollar in sales, especially impressive were digital sales for the PC platform: our guestimate places digital distribution at more than 50 million dollars i.e. a 20% revenue share.
According to Vlatko Andonov, president of the company, Bethesda could not be in a better position, as they ” have already received substantial re-orders from our retail partners, underscoring the tremendous popularity of this highly entertaining game. We believe Fallout: new Vegas will be a must buy title for gamers throughout the holiday season.”
This revenue opens up space for more investments into progressive gaming titles. In a way, we feel that Fallout 3 and the great success the company achieved paid way for current achievements, with Bethsoft even swallowing the legendary id Software.
Partnership with Obsidian Entertainment on Fallout: New Vegas turned out to be a secret ingredient that we feel was missing from Fallout 3, and the company is now poised for future success.
