In order to prepare for the launch this fall, EA is running an Alpha test for its successful Battlefield franchise. Russian site released a series of Battlefield 3 benchmarks made on the alpha code.
Even though benchmarking an alpha version of the game is somewhat pointless, due to lack of any major optimization in quality and performance (between Beta and RC), the 10 minute gameplay video below clearly shows the level of detail DICE ran with. According to the story, Battlefield 3 is being developed as a PC-based title using DICE’s own Frostbite 2.0 engine. Now, the best part of it is that Frostbite 2.0 is built completely from the ground up, natively designed as an DirectX 11 engine with a DirectX 10.0 fallback path.
As such, the game will only run on Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, as well as on the upcoming Windows 8.
The tests were run with DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 graphics cards: out of ten DX10 graphics cards, GTX 285 came on top with an average of 43fps, with Radeon HD 4890 coming in a distant fifth place with 35fps.
Out of DirectX 11 cards, the fastest card was Radeon HD 6990 with 82 frames per second, but second card was the GeForce GTX 580 with 78 fps. Given that GTX 590 scored 65fps, and was slower than GTX 570, and matched GTX 480, it is logical to conclude that SLI support is still to be built in.
Still, if you are on budget, you should be pleased to know that a single GTX560 scores 55fps and Radeon HD 6870 scores 48, all faster in DX11 mode than GTX 285 was able to give in less-detailed DX10 mode.
